In Cameroon, REDD-ALERT is working in the southwestern region, covering four departments: Nyong et So’o, Ocean, Mvila, and Valee du Ntem.

The area belongs roughly to the southern central plateau of Cameroon, the northwestern extension of the Congolese craton. The altitude ranges from 0 at the sea level to 800 m in the interior. The climate is of equatorial type with mean annual rainfall ranging between 1600 and 2600 mm. The distribution is biomodal with peaks occuring in May and October. The climacic vegetation is the rainforest. The rural population density range from 6 to 30 inhabitants per Km2. The main agricultural land uses are cocoa and oil palm in smallholder farms and Rubber (Hevea brasilensis plantations in agro industrial plantations). Soils are strongly weathered and are dominated by ferralitis soils with oxic properties. Shifting cultivation is the dominant practice for food crop production. The main crops are groundnut, cassava, plantains and maize.
