The Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is one of the 15 Future Harvest centres of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Founded in 1993, with its headquarters in Bogor (Indonesia), CIFOR has regional offices in Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Zambia, and it works in over 30 other countries around the world, with an annual budget of ~US$16 million. About one third of CIFOR’s budget is employed for financing partners’ work, with a stated “Centre Without Walls” approach. Its work is divided into three main programmes: Governance, Environmental Services, and Forest Livelihoods.

CIFOR brings to the proposed action a respected record in tropical forest research, and about decade with a globally leading role in research on the underlying causes of deforestation, on socioeconomics in tropical forests, and more recently a co-leading role in research on payments for environmental services (PES).

In REDD-ALERT, CIFOR would contribute to social forestry modelling and REDD governance issues, in collaboration with the Macaulay Institute and with World Agroforestry Centre scientists in Southeast Asia.
